We Don't Start With Logos (Here's Why)

One of the biggest misconceptions in branding is that it all starts with a logo. Like as soon as you’ve created a logo, there you have it, you’ve created a brand too. Jobs a good’un.

Not quite.

Granted, a logo is considered to be the most recognisable part of a brand. It's the thing that ends up on your website, packaging design, business cards and social media profiles. So naturally, people assume it's where the magic begins.

The truth is it isn’t.

At Noramble, we don't start with logos because a logo isn't the foundation of a successful brand. It's the result of one. Before we even think about sketching symbols or choosing any colours, we want to understand exactly who you are. What comes first then? Well, we’d say before anything else, you should start with your brand strategy.

A brand strategy holds the power to shape how your business is perceived, how it communicates to the world and how it grows over time. Every creative decision should be rooted in a clear strategic direction. If you don’t have a brand strategy behind you, you’re not giving your brand the best chance for success.

Let’s get into why a logo is never the first move.

Brand Strategy Comes Before Brand Design

What Is a Brand Strategy?

Before you can decide how your brand should look, you need to decide what it stands for.

That's what brand strategy is all about.

It's the thinking behind the visuals. The decisions that shape how people perceive your business long before a brand designer gets involved.

A great brand strategy defines things like:

  • Your purpose
  • Your mission
  • Your values
  • Your brand positioning
  • Your target audience
  • Your personality
  • Your competitive advantage

Together, these decisions create a framework that guides every creative choice moving forward. Essentially, brand strategy gives the design somewhere to go.

Why Design Without Strategy Creates Problems

Jumping straight into design usually creates more questions than answers.

Without a strategic foundation, brands often end up with:

It might look good today, but good branding isn't judged on launch day. It's judged years later when customers still recognise it instantly.

Strategy Provides Creative Direction

Contrary to popular belief, strategy doesn't limit creativity.

It gives this creativity purpose.

When designers understand your positioning, audience and personality, they're able to make better creative decisions.

Your brand strategy influences all of the following:

  • Colour palettes
  • Typography
  • Photography style
  • Illustration
  • Graphic devices
  • Tone of voice
  • Packaging systems
  • Even the logo itself

Brand design is the visual expression of the brand strategy that’s already in place.

Your Brand Design Should Reflect Your Brand Strategy

Every Visual Element Has a Job

One mistake we see all the time where people go wrong with brand design is when businesses treat their brand assets as separate pieces.

  • The logo gets designed.
  • Then someone picks a colour they like.
  • Then another person chooses fonts.
  • Maybe photography gets figured out later.

Eventually you've got a collection of assets that look great but don’t necessarily fit or feel like they belong together. If you cast your brain to brands you love, you’ll find that these brands don’t work this way. Every design choice makes sense, it’s intentional. As a brand, it's your responsibility to know that every visual element has a job to do.

These elements all need to tell the same story. We know, it’s easier said than done. But that’s exactly why you should partner with a brand design agency. We've worked with countless brands facing these exact challenges. Often, they're simply too close to their own business to recognise what's holding them back. It's only through an objective strategic process that the gaps become clear. By helping businesses double down on their brand strategy first, we've been able to create stronger, more distinctive brands that perform far beyond a visual redesign alone.

Why Consistency Builds Recognition

Customers don't usually recognise brands from a logo alone. They recognise patterns from brands that are dedicated to being consistent with all brand elements.

Brand ElementStrategic Purpose
LogoRecognition
ColourEmotional association
TypographyPersonality
ImageryStorytelling
Tone of voiceCommunication style
Graphic assetsConsistency across every touchpoint

Think about a huge brand like Coca-Cola.

You don't need to see the logo to know it's Coca-Cola. That particular shade of red. The distinctive bottle shape. The script typography. The photography style. The optimistic tone.

What are all these elements doing? They're all working together. The logo doesn't have to do all the heavy lifting. Any Coca-Cola product can be immediately spotted and pointed out among any shelves.

That's why consistency matters so much. Every interaction reinforces the next one until your brand becomes instantly recognisable.

Design Should Feel Intentional

Nothing in a strong brand should feel accidental. The typography shouldn't exist because someone liked the font. The colours shouldn't be chosen because they're trending at the minute. The photography shouldn't be whatever happened to be available. There needs to be a system. When one of these elements is neglected, the entire brand begins to feel inconsistent. Customers notice these inconsistencies (even if they can't explain why) and it can reduce trust and recognition.

That's why investing in every part of your brand matters. It’s honestly the best business investment you’ll ever make. If your photography no longer reflects your business, it's worth investing in new imagery. If your typography or supporting graphics feel disconnected, they should be revisited too. The goal isn't to perfect individual assets, it's to create a complete brand identity design system where every element supports the same story and reinforces the same perception.

Why the Logo Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle

Logos Matter But They're Not the Brand

Look, we're not here to say logos don’t matter … of course they do. We don’t live under a rock. They're often the first thing customers associate with your business and they play a mega role in recognition. But they can’t account for your entire brand. We think that’s where the problem lies – when people put so much weight on their logo to carry the entire brand.

Your logo is part of your identity, whereas your brand is what people think, feel and say about your business when you're not in the room. That's a huge difference.

Think about your favourite brands. They didn't become iconic because someone designed an amazing logo. They became iconic because they consistently delivered on a clear promise.

Take Apple. The company's original logo was an incredibly detailed illustration of Isaac Newton sitting beneath a tree. It's safe to say nobody's rushing to get that tattooed. Even the now-famous bitten apple wasn't what made Apple one of the world's most recognisable brands. Decades of trusted products, beautiful design, memorable campaigns like Think Different and a relentless focus on simplicity transformed a simple icon into a global symbol everyone knew.

Nike tells a similar story. The famous Swoosh cost just $35 back in 1971 (for today's economy, that's roughly the price of two coffees and a pastry 🙄). On its own, it's little more than a curved tick. But pair it with world-class athletes, unforgettable storytelling, incredible products and decades of consistent branding, and suddenly it's worth billions.

Amazon has another simple wordmark. What gives it meaning isn't the arrow underneath, it's years of fast delivery, Prime, convenience and trust built over time.

The pattern is always the same. The brand is what gives the logo meaning. Not the other way around.

Recognition Is Built Through the Whole Experience

Customers build trust through repeated experiences.

Recognition comes from everything working together:

  1. Customer experience
  2. Consistent messaging
  3. Visual identity
  4. Product or service quality
  5. Reputation
  6. Trust

Miss one of those and your logo will only do so much.

One of the simplest ways of testing a brand is to imagine removing the logo. Would people still recognise it?

  • Apple's minimalist product photography.
  • Nike's motivational messaging.
  • Coca-Cola's colour palette and bottle shape.

They all remain recognisable even if the logo isn’t present and that there is what a strong brand system looks like.

Our Approach: Strategy First, Design Second

How We Build Brands

At Noramble, we really get to know you. Why your business exists and why customers should care.

Don't be surprised if we ask questions that seem completely unrelated to branding. No, we've not lost the plot. We just know that the best brands aren't built from surface-level answers; they're built by understanding the people behind the business.

We dig deeper because your customers will too. They want to know who they're buying from, what you stand for and why they should care. The era of faceless businesses is well and truly over.

Our process usually looks like this:

Discovery ☕
This is where we get to know you. Not just what your business does, but why it exists in the first place. Whether it's over a coffee, a cocktail, or a Teams call in your comfiest hoodie (whatever floats your boat), we'll have a proper chat. Expect some deep questions, some unexpected ones, and maybe even a few that make you think, "How is this relevant?" Trust the process.

Research 🔍
Once we've got to know you, we get our heads down. We research your market, competitors and audience to uncover opportunities, identify what's setting you back, and understand where your brand can genuinely stand out. Don’t worry, we don’t stop there either. We also cast the net a little wider. The brands shaping the future aren't confined to one category anymore – they're creating ecosystems, communities and lifestyles. They’re not afraid to rebel against category conventions. We look for those opportunities too, so your brand is both keeping up and learning from where branding is heading.

Brand Strategy 🧭
This is where we build the foundations of your brand. Together, we'll define your purpose, values, brand personality, messaging and your brand positioning. We'll identify exactly where your brand sits in the market, what makes you different, who you're speaking to, and why customers should choose you over everyone else. By the end of this stage, we'll have a clear strategic direction that informs every creative decision that follows.

Creative Direction 🎨
Now the fun begins. Using everything we've uncovered, we establish the visual and creative direction for your brand. This gives us a clear blueprint before we design a single thing.

Brand Design ✏️
Only now do we start designing. See, we told you there’s a few steps before we get to anything visual! Your logo, typography, colour palette, imagery, graphics and every other visual asset are created to reflect the brand strategy we’ve worked hard to build, not the other way around.

Brand Rollout 🚀
Everyone’s favourite bit. Finally, we bring it all to life. Whether it's your website, social media, signage, packaging design or marketing materials, we make sure your new brand shows up consistently wherever your customers find you.

Every stage builds on the one before it.

Why This Creates Better Results

Starting with brand strategy helps create brands that are:

It also makes future decisions easier.

  • Need new packaging?
  • Launch a new product?
  • Build a website?
  • Create social content?

When the brand strategy is clear, every creative decision becomes easier because everyone is working from the same playbook.

Look, we love designing logos. It’s our thing! But what’s better is designing logos that genuinely mean something. Every colour, every typeface, every graphic device and every layout decision should have a reason for existing.

Conclusion

We hope you’ve learned a little about why the logo never comes first. What does? Brand strategy, of course. You need to understand your brand. The best identities are built on clear positioning, a deep understanding of your audience and a strategy that gives every creative decision purpose. We’re not here to write off logos … we could never! We know a logo is an incredibly important asset, but it's only one piece of a much bigger system. Get the strategy right first, and the design has something meaningful to say.

Hiya, I’m Daniel. I started Noramble because I was frustrated seeing so many brands looking, talking, and feeling the same. Decision-making when shopping for a product becomes impossible and a chore, resulting in chasing the lowest price or the best deal.
